Network Configuration
Windows Vista
The following instructions are for the proper configuration of Windows Vista computers for the RIT network.
Ethernet Installation
If your computer came with an Ethernet adapter, you can skip this step. If you have to install an Ethernet adapter, follow the installation directions that came with the adapter.
- Log onto your computer using an account that has administrator privileges.
- Connect your Ethernet patch cable to your computer and to the blue jack in the wall (see wall jacks).
- Click on the Start button, then Control Panel.
- Open Network and Sharing Center and then open the Manage Network Connections tab on the left side.
- Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.
- Check to see that under Connect Using box your Network adapter is listed.
- Highlight the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) by clicking on it once, and then click the Properties button.
- Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server automatically, click OK.
- Save the setting changes and close the window.
- Restart your computer.
Windows XP
The following instructions are for the proper configuration of Windows XP computers for the RIT network.
Ethernet Installation
If your computer came with an Ethernet adapter, you can skip this step. If you have to install an Ethernet adapter, follow the installation directions that came with the adapter.
Software Configuration Part 1
- Log onto your computer using an account that has administrator privileges.
- Connect your Ethernet patch cable to your computer and to the blue jack in the wall (see wall jacks).
- Click on the Start button, then Control Panel.
- Open Network and Internet Connections and then open the Network Connections control panel
- Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.
- Check to see that under Connect Using box your Network adapter is listed.
- Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) by clicking on it once, and then click the Properties button.
- Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server automatically, click OK.
- Save the setting changes and close the window.
- Restart your computer.
Software Configuration Part 2 (Optional)
- Go to the Start button and then Run.
- Type cmd in the text box and click OK.
- Type ipconfig /all at the prompt and hit Enter.
- Check in the IP address field to check your address for a number that begins with 10.21.xxx.xxx or 129.21.xxx.xxx (the x's are determined by your building
and floor location).
- If you see a number other than 10.21.xxx.xxx or 129.21.xxx.xxx then type ipconfig /release at the prompt and hit Enter.
- Then, type ipconfig /renew at the prompt and hit Enter. If you still do not see a 10.21.xxx.xxx or 129.21.xxx.xxx address see the Troubleshooting
section.
- When you have obtained a 10.21.xxx.xxx or 129.21.xxx.xxx IP address, you may
type exit and press Enter to exit the prompt.
Windows 2000
The following instructions are for the proper configuration of Windows 2000 computers for the RIT network.
Ethernet Installation
If your computer came with an Ethernet adapter, you can skip this step. If you have to install an Ethernet adapter follow the installation directions that came with the adapter.
Software Configuration part 1
The following software configuration steps may require your Windows 2000 CD-ROM or installation CD-ROM. One of these options should have come with your computer.
- Log onto your computer using an account that has administrator privileges.
- Connect your Ethernet patch cable to your computer and to the blue jack in the wall (see wall jacks).
- Go to the Start button, then click Settings and then Network & Dial-up Connections.
- Double click the Local Area Network Connection icon.
- Click the properties button and in the Connect using text box your Ethernet adapter should appear.
- Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) by clicking on it once, and then click the properties button.
- Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server addresses automatically, click OK, save the settings and close the window. You may receive a message that your adapter does not have a WINS address. Please ignore this message. Your computer will receive all of the addresses it needs automatically from the DHCP server.
- Restart your computer.
Software Configuration part 2 (Optional)
- Click on the Start button and then Run.
- Type cmd in the text box and click OK.
- Type ipconfig /renew and hit Enter.
- Check in the IP address field to check your address for a number that begins with 10.21.xxx.xxx or 129.21.xxx.xxx(the x's are determined by your building
and floor location).
- If you see a number other than 10.21.xxx.xxx or 129.21.xxx.xxx then type ipconfig /release at the prompt and hit Enter.
- Type ipconfig /renew at the prompt and hit Enter. If you still do not see a 10.21.xxx.xxx or 129.21.xxx.xxx address see the Troubleshooting
section.
- When you have obtained a 10.21.xxx.xxx or 129.21.xxx.xxx IP Address,
you can type exit and press Enter to exit and close the program.

Macintosh OS X 10.5.x (Leopard)
The following instructions are for the proper configuration of Mac OS X 10.3 (or later) computers to the RIT Network.
Ethernet Installation
All recent models of Apple/Macintosh computers have Ethernet adapters pre-installed (desktop and laptop systems). Your Ethernet adapter is located in the back or side of your computer under an icon that looks like this <...>.
Software Configuration
- Connect your Ethernet patch cable to your computer and to the blue jack in the wall (see wall jacks).
- Select the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of your screen, select System Preferences.
- Click on the Network Icon.
- Find and select Built-in Ethernet on the list of network adapters.
- Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab.
- Make sure the Configure IPv4 dropdown menu has Using DHCP selected.
- If the IP Address begins with 10.21.xxx.xxx, click the OK button, close System Preferences, and you may proceed to the Network Registration section.
- If the IP Address field contains any other address, press the Renew DHCP Lease button. An IP address in the form 10.21.xxx.xxx should appear after a few seconds. If it does not, double-check your cable connection and contact the Resnet office if you are in need of further assistance.
Macintosh OS X 10.3.x / 10.4.x (Panther / Tiger)
The following instructions are for the proper configuration of Mac OS X 10.3 (or later) computers to the RIT Network.
Ethernet Installation
All recent models of Apple/Macintosh computers have Ethernet adapters pre-installed (desktop and laptop systems). Your Ethernet adapter is located
in the back or side of your computer under an icon that looks like this <...>.
Software Configuration
- Connect your Ethernet patch cable to your computer and to the blue jack in the wall (see wall jacks).
- Select the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of your screen, select System Preferences.
- Click on the Network Icon.
- Find and select Built-in Ethernet on the list of network adapters.
- Click the Configure button.
- Make sure the Configure IPv4 dropdown menu has Using DHCP selected.
- You may also add rit.edu to the Search Domains box.
- If the IP Address begins with 10.21.xxx.xxx, click the Apply Now button, close System Preferences, and you may proceed to the Network
Registration section.
- If the IP Address field contains any other address, press the Renew DHCP Lease button. An IP address in the form 10.21.xxx.xxx should appear after a few seconds. If it does not, double-check your cable connection and contact the Resnet office if you are in need of further assistance.
Macintosh OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar)
The following instructions are for the proper configuration of Mac OS X 10.x (up to version 10.2) computers to the RIT Network.
Ethernet Installation
All recent models of Apple/Macintosh computers have Ethernet adapters pre-installed (desktop and laptop systems). Your Ethernet adapter is located in
the back or side of your computer under an icon that looks like this <...>.
Software Configuration
- Connect your Ethernet patch cable to your computer and to the blue jack in the wall (see wall jacks).
- Select the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of your screen, select System Preferences.
- Click on the Network Icon.
- Choose Automatic from the Location pull down menu.
- Choose Built-in-Ethernet from the Show menu.
- Click on the TCP/IP tab.
- Choose Using DHCP from the Configure pull down menu.
- You may also add rit.edu to the Search Domains box.
- Click Apply Now and close the Network window and exit from System Preferences.
- If you are unable to access the registration page at this point, please contact the Resnet office for further assistance.
