About Resnet
The Residential Computing Office, or Resnet, provides computer and network support for students residing in all of the RIT Residence Halls, Colony Manor, Perkins Green, University Commons, Racquet Club mid-rise apartment complexes, and the RIT Inn & Conference Center. The Residential Computing Network is a shared, finite resource installed by RIT to promote scholarship and learning for all students. Accidental or intentional disruption of the residence network deprives others of access to important institute resources. Persons attaching computers to institute residential networks must comply with the RIT Code of Conduct for Computer and Network Use and the Residential Network Appropriate Use Policy.

Resnet Tech Center
The Tech Center is a general-purpose computer repair, maintenance and upgrade facility. Our services are provided to students living on campus free of charge. Problems most commonly handled by the Tech Center include operating system installation and patching, virus scanning and removal, spyware/adware cleaning, hardware troubleshooting, and network connectivity. The Tech Center is also well equipped to perform a general "tune-up" and security check on your computer to ensure it is running at an optimal level.
- The Tech Center can diagnose problematic computers and hardware, install/upgrade components, and can perform data recovery in some
situations.
- The Tech Center makes every effort to perform work on computers without losing important data, such as schoolwork. We operate a backup server
that can back up the data on your hard drive while repairs are being done to ensure that no important information is lost. We will not back up
material that may be potentially copyrighted, including but not limited to: MP3 files, movie files, or pornography.
- To protect your privacy, and be sure that your password meets the RIT security standard, it is our policy to change all login passwords. You
will be notified of what the new passwords are when the machine is picked up.
- Bring all Operating System and program CD's (Microsoft Office, etc) to the Resnet office when you bring your computer. Having the computer media
available will quicken the repair process.
- The Tech Center will under no circumstances perform service on a computer that has a clearly pirated or cracked operating system. This is
especially important for Windows users, because it is required that your computer be running the latest service pack version to use the RIT network.
Windows XP service packs specifically will not install on an illegal copy of Windows. RIT has a limited licensing agreement with Microsoft, Windows XP Pro is now sold at a reduced student price in the bookstore. Contact the Campus Connections bookstore for more information about purchasing Windows media.
- If any computer being serviced has programs or material on it that could be considered illegal or a violation of policy, the Resnet staff must alert their supervisors.
